This book comes from the work I have done so far, and a desire to share knowledge between gardeners, designers and growers at all scales. The Kindest Garden is about creating beautiful places where whole ecosystems can thrive; it’s about moving beyond an extractive system by putting back, nurturing ourselves and regenerating our surroundings. I hope you will take some optimism, some tools and practical ideas from the examples and the approach I’m sharing – together with some inspiration and questions to continue exploring. There are many imponderables to solve, and the more receptive we become the more questions we raise. What lies beneath the ocean and how do the planets affect us; how best is it to communicate with and coexist with the other beings on Earth and with ourselves; how many millions more unknown fungi, bacteria and viruses are there? These questions all need researchers, and practitioners, with open minds. Words are the best gifts, better than flowers and up there with a beautiful sunrise or a heartfelt hug. These words are a gift from Andy Cato: change maker, friend and all round good egg. Not only did he sell the rights to his music from Groove Armada to buy a farm and learn how to farm in harmony with nature, he has gone on to co-found Wildfarmed, bringing healthier flour and bread to as many guts as possible and healthy soil and water to the land. A true hero of our era, but more than that a really kind person. Despite his crazy schedule he read an early copy of The Kindest Garden and sent the review below. Trees for bees! Cornus mas, cornelian or European cherry, native to south and Western Europe and one of the very earliest bee forage feasts in the UK. With its small tart cherries in autumn it packs in a lot of nutrition for a small space in a garden. The cherries are edible for humans and birds, and used to make jam or a fruit leather in Western Europe. It also has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine in which it is known as shānzhūyú (山茱萸) and used to retain the jing, which is the essence, a combination of yin and yang both inherited and developed, a concept similar to epigenetics.. of which more another day. #treesforbees #pollinatorplants #regenerativedesign

A few glimpses of a recent return to Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa’s home and masterpiece. The way he designs with the trees and the landscape have inspired me for years. He wasn’t shy to flatten the top of the rise to improve his vista, but his terraces and steps are built with trees and the nature details in his own bedroom are exquisite. His resting place is a simple stone and urn under a tree and his legacy as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest architects lives on in many places. A slight place of pilgrimage not only for us, there are usually other artists, wonderful architects and thoughtful people at the evening drinks on the lawn as the sun goes down. When I was four, I camped out one night in a garden den with my big sister. I woke to darkness and silence. Frightened, I peered out of the den. And there saw my grandmother, sleeping in a chair among the roses. A rug over her knees, she was watching over us. Her kind presence transformed the garden. It became an enchanted place full of ancient sounds and mysterious scents. I became lost in wonder, enthralled by the magic of every detail.
