I have heard that in Japan temple gardeners in white gloves collect fallen leaves and present them to holy men who chose the most beautiful and perfect, which are then carefully returned to rest on top of the hedges.

Revisiting a garden cocreated by @marianboswallstudio nearly ten years ago, I was drawn to look for perfectly beautiful leaves..

Are you a landscape architect looking to work in a fun, flexible and truly regenerative studio?

We are hiring @marianboswallstudio . You :- might be a rising star with about three years experience, or a talented CMLI, or an architect or land manager switching to landscape architecture with another career behind you. We :- are collaborative team focused on some of the most exciting large scale regenerative work in the countryside, plus beautiful historic residential estates and public and therapeutic spaces in the city.

To work efficiently we need:- fluency in Adobe, Vectorworks and preferably Q GIS, with hand drawing and solid plant knowledge ~ or exceptional talent in some of these, with on going training offered in others.

We are a Landscape Institute registered practice and offer mentoring for the pathway to chartership.

Discretion and an ability to work well with clients is a must. We are based in Kent and London and spend time at site meetings across the UK.

These are full time roles, with generous wide ranging CPD; health care, pension and holiday packages.

We work on some wonderful projects and focus on those that can really make a difference - with an emphasis on regeneration, using skilled local crafts people and planting with nature. Our larger scale nature recovery work, includes river rewiggling and floodplain restoration at several sites across the UK. We also have some projects abroad but these roles are for UK based residents.

We are known for our work on historic and sensitive sites as well as for beautiful resilient planting, with a focus on soil health, agroecology and the link with nutrient dense food.

This is our studio garden. It’s not everyone’s idea of tidy but it is perfect for our biodiversity enhancing experiments and upcycling ethos.

Ten years on ~ gentle planting aging gracefully in

Ten years on ~ gentle planting aging gracefully in the autumn light a decade after this garden was created.

Self binding clay gravel, oak edging and pergola, all designed to last and then gradually decay one day wabi sabi style.

A disused garage covered the site before, I should probably dig out photos, but I did manage to find an award certificate ~ ‘planting design 2015’ ~ as the owners are opening for the ngs next year.

Until then a quiet haven to join a yoga class in the barn, or sit with a cup of tea under the pergola surrounded by a beautiful energy, client/site’s own.

Recently I had to sort out registering powers of a

Recently I had to sort out registering powers of attorney for my parents. My mother took me to her local Nationwide bank. We walked in and sat and waited for about five minutes and were then shown to a table with the manager who took us through it all and completed the registrations online in about twenty minutes. She was incredibly kind and knows my parents well as they often pop in to pay a bill or check something has been paid, or increasingly to ask if an email is a scam.. and the people in the bank answer all their questions. And they are patient and so kind. And when my mother tells me on the phone that she’s just popped in to the bank to ask them something, as she often does, as a daughter far away I want to send them chocolates and pink dahlias and hugs of deep gratitude.

Let there be .. just enough.. light With darker e

Let there be .. just enough.. light

With darker evenings it’s lovely to have enough light to see the pathway to the front door, without disrupting the bat and moth routes with the over lighting sometimes seen when outside is made too like inside.

This lovely old pot has a ‘bat hat’ light fitting discretely placed in the top. You can just see the rim ~ it’s a simple solar powered IP68 rated (waterproof) light with a special cover that prevents light shining upwards and so is friendly to bats and other creatures, and is a friendly welcome to me as I fumble in my pockets for house keys on a dark autumn evening.

We often work in designated Dark Skies protected areas, and have used this Solareye80 as part of lighting strategies in many projects. My November newsletter includes a piece on wildlife sensitive lighting, so do sign up if you’d like to be on the list.

Ahimsa: do no harm

We are incredibly lucky @marianboswallstudio to be invited to work in some of the most beautiful places I know, so our number one priority is to leave it in better health than we found it; to do no harm.

For that to happen we have to listen to, and work together with, the land, rather than imposing a design based in ego. We need our incredibly skilled and thoughtful contractors who turn these plans into reality. We need our co designers in architects, engineers and supporting authorities.. And most of all we rely on brilliant like-minded clients who see themselves as long term investors, stewards and custodians of their beautiful piece of our living earth.

My huge gratitude to them all.

Recrafting creativity.. new perspectives

A beautiful collective exploring regeneration through the arts, from singing with nightingales and the pilgrimages for ancient sites or for turtle doves of @samleesong to the incredible work of Ingrid Weyland @ingridwey bringing the feelings of iceberg and forest to life.., I have found so much depth, resonance and hope amongst these creative people and their practices.

I am honoured to be asked to be a part of this, and look forward to sharing my practices as well as weaving future working stories together with the other artists.

I will be online for three short presentations of our work followed by an interactive Q&A this Sunday ~ with @fionapicklesartist and @michellemooredesigns . Founder and host Elizabeth Greaves says it’s more of a fireside discussion .. join us at 10am Sunday 3rd or via a catch up recording.

When .. you look at trees, you see all these diffe

When .. you look at trees, you see all these different trees. And some of them are bent, and some of them are straight, and some of them are evergreens, and some of them are whatever. And you look at the tree and you allow it. You see why it is the way it is.

You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, and so it turned that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. You appreciate the tree.

The minute you get near humans, you lose all that. And you are constantly saying ‘You are too this, or I’m too this.’ That judgment mind comes in.

And so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just the way they are.

Reconnecting with ourselves is as necessary as bru

Reconnecting with ourselves is as necessary as brushing our teeth. How come we forget?

I spent last weekend @42acresretreat just gently remembering where we came from, and what makes us happy. Simple things and yet it’s so easy to be distracted by shiny stuff and short term validations.

To regenerate our land, ecology, economy, we must begin with ourselves.

We started with a wild walk looking at the beaver wetlands plus some exciting new introductions.., then supper, yin yoga and sound healing with @bethanymillgate. We slept in incredible bedrooms, then foraged for food and medicine with @landfoodmedicine, some people went wild swimming, some paddle boarding, options of sauna, beaver meditation, truly incredible food from the gardens cooked under the stars… fireside chat and mushroom log creation, plus guest teacher @mariannasfyridi who introduced us to Capoeira, a beautiful playful way to move your body, and remember that connection can be a lot of fun!

This retreat sold out in a few days, so.. we are doing another in March 2025.

Huge thanks to everyone at @42acresretreat and @betheearth.foundation for bringing so much intentional joy to the world and allowing me to be a little part of your vision.
