CHICHESTER HARBOUR
Landscape and gardens for a new house situated next to a stunning natural harbour with private jetty.
The landscape design included a walled potager garden, dining terrace with planted pergola, cider-makers’ orchard, climate resilient gravel gardens, playful boardwalk and woodland nature area.
The potager contains a mix of productive borders with with loose, aromatic planting around the edges and along the base of the dipping pond and surrounding walls. A collection of vintage garden pots, beautiful troughs and stonework hold water and plants for pollinators. Fruit trees provide spring blossom and dappled shade, whilst a row of fruit trees along the eastern wall gives a gentle sense of enclosure.
The new woodland was planted with over 85 native trees. A woodland grove with standing stones provides a haven in which to be immersed in nature. Drought tolerant gravel gardens are planted with aromatic and pollinator-friendly plants, with multi stem trees for structure and wildlife.
Site-won and reclaimed materials are used throughout the project, from natural stone wall coping to reclaimed timber. The boardwalk is from salvaged oak lock gates and oak beams found on site, connecting to the sea path and reflecting the materiality of the jetty. Where material has been brought in, sustainable and local sources have been used, such as the handmade bricks and reclaimed tiles for the walled potager.
